The Dangers of Public Speaking without Weight and Originality
By Erwin Parengkuan-Founder, CEO, Strategic Communication Coach TALKINC
Public speaking skills are really needed in this hyper-connected era.Imagine if someone had extraordinary skills but did not have the ability to articulate and convey what was in his head to the public in an interesting way.How can he express these skills?During the twenty years that I have been in the profession as a Professional Communication Coach, I have seen many examples of students and training participants having obstacles in becoming interesting and powerful Public Speakers.Low self-confidence and mental block are the biggest main factors for them with words that I often hear, "It's hard to speak in a structured manner," "It's hard to be attractive when performing," "It's hard to be confident," and other "difficult things."This is a concrete example when someone resists change because they do not want to pay the price with persistent and consistent effort. When I attended training at London Business School, UK, 2 years ago with the material Coaching and Leadership, I had a chance to chat with a professor who discussed Epigenetics (above genetics);how Nature and Nurture will influence a person's life.Honestly, at that time I didn't understand what he meant and after finishing talking to him I looked for the meaning of neuroscience terminology which was started to be discussed by world neuroscientists in the early 2000s.In essence, how effort when combined with the right environment will make someone become proficient in their field. In my opinion, this is the path that absolutely everyone chooses to become successful and empowered and stand out;including the ability to speak in public.Unfortunately, not all of us have the Mental Energy and Mental Maps to want to love a process which is the only key to someone's success in achieving their life goals (purpose).
TALKINC teaches participants to implement 3 main pillars in communication; The first is getting to know oneself well which is contained in the Personal Development modules, followed by Communication Fundamentals which I will explain in this article - every individual must master the communication components correctly, and ending with the third pillar, namely, Advancing in Public Speaking Skills. This is a stage that participants must go through, it is not easy, but it can be carried out in a continuous process.Plus, most people have a tendency to want things that are easy.Next question;Has the spirit of shortcuts also become part of our society's culture today?I want it to be fast, I want it to be easy. It's also strange if someone wants to become a reliable Public Speaker but is lazy about practicing and applying it in everyday life.
The influence of Javanese culture brought by most of this country's leaders who tend to serve rather than serve, so this is in stark contrast to the motto of Indonesian Education hero Ki Hajar Dewantara (stated on the Ministry of Education and Culture's website), namely "Tut Wuri Handayani" (behind giving encouragement), has created a culture of indifference, passivity, or even passive-aggressiveness in our society. This "relic" has mushroomed into cultures that feel uncomfortable speaking directly (assertive), as well as ancient Asian cultures where children did not have the right to speak - in contrast to children in the western world.Without realizing it, we have made a big contribution to why most of our society is not confident and comfortable when speaking in public.
Another impact of not reading books regularly is the problem of blanks which often arise and result in someone producing filler words. For example, “E…e…, what is that called,”or “ehmm, and ehmmm.”Why do people often do this when speaking? There are 3 potentials that arise: first, someone is not confident, second, someone has difficulty finding the right words, either too many synonyms or too few, usually this happens because of a lack of vocabulary, and third is the problem of habits that continue to be carried out.So let's treat this disease by controlling ourselves, replacing "Eeee..eee" with pauses/silences that must be continued in everyday communication.Reading books regularly will increase a person's Verbal Fluency. When we see someone speaking with limited words, we can understand what's inside their head.In fact, words that flow like "fuel" for a public speaker.Just look at world figures such as Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr, Winston Churchill, Oprah Winfrey, even Malala Yousafzai, they are so eloquent and free from filler.
Words. So, in fact there are lots of inspiring examples that can be our benchmark/reference for appearing attractive in front of the public.Even when talking about weight, there must be an appropriate measure.Audiences cannot remember too many messages.Someone who lacks Self-awareness or even Mindfulness will have difficulty being interesting and building connections in public.Makes what he conveys too much, unstructured, out of context, only one way, etc. What you need to remember is that humans have limited memory capacity, and they even find it difficult to focus due to the many distractions that come from within themselves or from external factors.Generally, we can only remember no more than 3 messages.Someone who has awareness (Self-awareness) will be able to control himself in public (Self-control), someone who is fully aware (Mindfulness) will be 100% present (be present) and can easily build relationships with the audience and know how many messages will be conveyed.Because the audience really understands that if they are bombarded with lots of messages, they won't remember anything.Digital disruption causes a person's memory capacity (Attention Span) to decrease.A communicator should be able to measure the right duration of time so that the speech does not take too long, ramble on and repeat sentences because it will be very boring.
In Public Speaking there are 3 areas with different portion weights: Opening has the least weight, Content has the greatest weight, and Closing is not too big.The skill to analyze who our audience is through Mapping and Profiling is essential because this will be the first determination that everyone must carry out in-depth research. After that, it is absolutely necessary to prepare by arranging the words that will be said by following the 3T rules (directed, structured and complete).Avoid using ambiguous words such as the following examples: "We will convey the following things," So, how many are there?two?three?twenty?or “That's what we meant!”which one is that?Using the words "Maybe," "I guess," "If I'm not mistaken," "More or less...", etc. will make the audience confused. Not to mention word placement;“Us vs Us,” “Me vs Me,” or “You” words to give to an older audience.Someone with the aim of making an impact in the context of Public Speaking but ends it with words;"Hopefully what I said was useful!"Or some leaders when making a presentation close it with a rhyme, which ends up being an anti-climax.Pantun is generally used to lighten the atmosphere and should be done at the beginning, not at the end because it will obscure the purpose of the communication and the audience will remember only the words;“Cute and saucy.”Some of the examples above show how uncritical a person is in doing public speaking.Clarity is important to be able to move what is in our "Heads" to the Audience's "Heads".
art that requires skill in combining the "fruit" of one's thoughts with what one believes, including;Value, Goal, Connection, Visual Imagery, and conveyed confidently with words that arouse emotions through a perspective (Perspective) and can provide new information, clarification, inspiration and motivation. From decade to decade, Public Speaking will adapt according to the demands of the times, although the goal remains the same, namely to provide influence. If public speaking is delivered using rhetoric like our first President, John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, etc., of course it will no longer be relevant in today's modern world.
Istilah lama yang sering didengar yakni; “Don’t judge a book by its cover!” We do judge a book by its cover.”
I found 2 important keywords in the meaning of communication/speaking in public, namely: Positiveness and Understanding. If we want to influence the person we are talking to, of course we cannot use negative words, because the essence of communication is to build relationship bridges.Negative words will actually "burn" bridges. And if someone speaking does not have the word understanding, then the public speaking that is done cannot reach the hearts of the audience.Stuck in language that is difficult to understand (ambiguous), and uses a lot of technical language that is foreign to the listener's ears.In the end, what happens is that the message is not delivered, and we are just wasting our time. So, choose language that is easy to understand.Don't assume that what we are going to say will be immediately understood by the audience.Indeed, to be interesting in the art of speaking in this era of digital disruption requires someone to be able to adapt quickly, just as the language we choose must keep up with the times. In the predigital era, we didn't know the terms;Baper, Mager, Healing, Ambis, Ghosting etc.
Next, the words or sentences we say are divided into 3 important aspects: Head, Heart, and Hand.Head is accurate and up-to-date data that must be presented.Heart is an approach from the heart that touches the emotions of the person you are talking to, and Hand is what action we expect from the audience.Starting from opening with a smiling and enthusiastic voice, it will make the audience happy and forget about their life problems for a moment.Negative Energy is overcome by your Positive Energy, and this will rub off on them. Then, think about what bait (Catch) will attract the attention of the Audience, this will make all eyes turn to you.Can we choose to throw Data first, or an Emotion approach? And in content we can combine these 3 approaches on an ongoing basis.Example: 8 million tons of plastic waste decomposes into the sea (Head), imagine how humanity will behave towards marine biota (Heart) that die because in their stomachs there is a lot of micro and nano plastic. So what kind of actions will we take in using single-use plastic?(Hand), and so on.The combination of Head, Heart and Hand will always be present in the communication structure. And it is every individual's freedom to play it.Try to imagine what would happen if the material we delivered only contained Heads and too much?Or just Heart without conveying accurate data?Another thing that often happens is that a Public Speaker fails to steal the audience's attention because they don't have anything new to say, such as;the latest data, case studies, observations, story-telling, to provide a new perspective with weight and benefits, even though this is the part that the audience has been waiting for.
Now is the time for us to talk about the Blueprint or Structure in Public Speaking/presentations which is divided into 3 main parts: Opening with a weight of 10%, Content with a weight of 70%, and Closing with a weight of 20%.This flow will be your guide in preparing a Blueprint (like wanting to build a house). An opening that is too long will make the audience bored. The flow of the presentation should be carried out with thorough preparation and must be internalized by a leader when he wants to do Public Speaking, not relying on a script from the secretary/spokesperson and then just having to read it, as a result someone will appear unconvincing.Reading a speech script, saying opening greetings to the audience by reading the text without making eye contact, is failure
key in creating a First Impression. No connectivity is established (Connection). The flow in the Blueprint must also be made not like a flat line, but must be made to continue to escalate, like the analogy of climbing a ladder.Make your plot full of surprises because that will keep your audience's attention. It's like when watching a film, if we can see the storyline, scene by scene in the film, we won't be excited to watch it again.Nowadays, audiences demand a plot that is full of dynamics. So, we ourselves must be responsible for rehearsing it, orchestrating it, and bringing it to life in front of an audience.Don't forget to think about the 3 aspects in the presentation Blueprint: What? What do you want to convey, Why?Why is this topic brought up?And How?How to convey with good Story Telling skills.Mastery in making a Blueprint must also be adjusted to the Train of Thought/train of thought of the audience which runs parallel to your thoughts, like two people walking together, connected and interconnected.
Our society is a society that likes to tell stories, as proven in every coffee shop, at home or even in a luxury hotel, everyone will be interested in hearing a story. For this reason, be an interesting Story Teller when delivering your presentation.Don't forget to include some relevant examples that support the flow of your presentation.Public Speaking is not all about weight, but rather how you convey it with open words, voice and body language. In my opinion, intonation is the "soul" of a person with the unique character of their voice. We have to play various intonations like music. At the beginning of a conversation, an enthusiastic tone of voice will certainly steal attention, then this tone of voice will change according to the passion/emotion of the message contained in it.When do we pause, when do we emphasize, and use a variety of speech speeds, with clear articulation.Even though voice only has 20% impact, words 10%, appearance 10%, and body language with the greatest weight is 60% in Communication Anatomy (Communication Fundamentals).Body language as we know plays a very big role, because this is visible to the naked eye.Body Language is honest language. We can easily identify a person's level of self-confidence through their body language.Does someone look nervous, confident or arrogant when performing?Of course, self-confidence is the basis for someone to be able to conquer the audience that we discussed at the beginning of this article. However, before we appear, we must first be able to believe in ourselves (Belief System) regarding the weight/usefulness (Benefit) that we will provide to the audience. If someone only speaks from their own point of view without paying attention to the audience's point of view, they will certainly fall into the trap of patronizing. So the word Understanding becomes important: Understanding your Self-image, Understanding the Audience Perspective, and Understanding your Personality Traits, are forms of preparation that are absolutely necessary.
So if you ask how much weight is the percentage vs the method of delivery?Of course the portion of the delivery method becomes bigger. It can be said that the weight is only 30% and the way of conveying is 70%, with appropriate gestures starting from: Head, Hands, Posture and Standing (Posture and Stance).Feet or hands that move too much when standing will indicate someone is nervous. Not to mention the lack of even eye contact
to all the audience present, there is no sincere smile from the heart, stiff hand movements, hands in pockets will make us look arrogant, especially with pointing hands.Hands behind our backs make us look insecure.Hand Gestures adapted to Flow will provide emphasis, such as when we say good, followed by the shape of a fist and an upright thumb will sharpen a message.“Speak with your hand!”When we understand that the main purpose of Public Speaking is to influence, we need to realize that humans use three main senses when seeing a speaker on stage. The three senses are: the sense of sight (body language and appearance), the sense of hearing (total vocal), and the sense of taste (kinesthetic). The sense of taste will determine your audience (First Impression) and is stored longer in memory (Top of Mind) than the other two senses.
We have talked at length about the weight that a Public Speaker must have. Now is the time to explore the meaning of originality (authenticity) as in the title of this article.Authentic, which means how someone displays their self-image without making it up.On the other hand, no one wants to look bad in the eyes of others, but if someone always pretends in interactions, over time it will stick in other people's memories and distance themselves from being authentic. On the other hand, an impression that is built consciously and continues to be done consistently will build a person's Brand Image to be more widely known.Just as the sense of taste (Kinesthetic) has the longest influence in a person's memory, the impression of what we show can be felt directly by the audience, whether you are ready or not.In one of our materials on Personal Branding, there is a discussion about Understanding your Self Image, namely how Self Image and Social Image are built in harmony even though in reality they are not always the same. For example, someone who is energetic can be seen by other people as being capricious/excessive, or someone who feels that they are caring is considered by other people to be demanding, etc.Our version of Personal Branding is divided into two components: Main Component which consists of: Value, Skill and Behavior, and Additional Components: Total Look, Authenticity and Uniqueness.“Artificial” Elements
In Personal Branding it still exists, but it doesn't have a large portion, namely when someone has a role model that will make them imitate one of the idol's strengths, over time if it continues to be done it will become a new habit and be manifested. This is where the process of making Personal Branding goes from Created to Authentic.
Authentic people can easily build relationships with anyone they meet, meaning that person is "done" with themselves and is an open person. They PD wherever they are, without bringing their ego.A figure like this is an attractive person and becomes a "magnet" for other people. It is an important asset for a person to be able to have a positive influence on the surrounding environment and become an accomplished Public Speaker. The word Authentic also cannot be separated from a person's character and personality, and the type of personality that makes them "open" is an Ambivert personality.A term that developed when Carl Jung in his book Psychological Types (1921) wrote that there are people who are not too introverted and not too extroverted. This type of personality is someone who is balanced and easily gets along with anyone, doesn't have many layers, isn't distant, and is liked by everyone. If we talk about impressions/Personal Branding, it must also fulfill the 3T elements: Visible, Felt and Measurable."Seen" from body language and appropriate appearance, "Feels" means full awareness that is carried everywhere, and "Measurable" means that their existence is recognized and they have a high level of performance experience.Lack of self-awareness (Self-Awareness and Mindfulness) will lead a person to only show his ideal side on social media or in public, but not his original side.In fact, in human DNA, there is 0.1% difference compared to the 8 billion people in the world. So, there is genetic uniqueness in each person. In my opinion, everyone should be able to show a unique side that makes them stand out among the crowd.
As netizens, we are very tired of seeing many figures with the "shields" they put up.Including someone's general/normative style, does not steal the audience's attention.A trap that ultimately makes a Public Speaker not considered to exist.Plus the “Fear” of being different, so they are seen
the same as other people.Courage is a person's main capital in exploring himself (Self-Exploration and Self-Discovery) in discovering his unique side.Being different not only requires courage, but also requires consistency in building your self-image/Personal Branding.Courage and high curiosity (Curiosity) are the "Energy" that will make us continue to process and become proficient. Many factors make it difficult for someone to reveal their authentic side.Fear of being called ugly, or going out of position, being uncomfortable with oneself, past trauma, and many other fears.Making peace with oneself is the most important thing because no one is perfect, so Self-Acceptance is mandatory to be able to open ourselves, so that we continue to move forward and become what we are (Actual-Self).Be Authentic and be Real!
Lastly, the following capital is essential for a Public Speaker, namely having sincerity which will make someone easily accepted and able to honestly convey what they feel and have.Remember, everything that comes from the heart will reach the heart, as long as the authenticity we display does not violate applicable norms and rules. And when we talk about communication, we are not only talking about weight and uniqueness, but we are also talking about a person's behavior in order to build a meaningful relationship (Meaningful Engagement).Someone can be very skilled in their field, but if they don't have the ability to respect other people, have empathy, of course no one will want to work with them. This increasingly noisy and hot world makes us only want to be close to those who are pleasant and sincere, who make us feel happy and comfortable around them. Many people are not aware of maintaining sustainability in interpreting a long-term relationship. Our country needs a lot of Public Speakers who can be a source of motivation in this country, not only have the authority but must also be authentic to build the country to welcome a Golden Indonesia 2045.
