Generally, in understanding effective communication, we focus on the speaker or message giver.Even though the party that is no less important than that is the listener.Misunderstandings often occur when listeners incorrectly receive and interpret the information conveyed. Why is that? The answer is simple, we don't pay enough attention to the message being conveyed. Therefore, a skill is needed for listeners, namely Active Listening.
Active listening is a conscious effort to not only listen to the words that other people convey but most importantly to capture the complete message being communicated. How can we listen actively?
1. Listen, pay attention to the person you are talking to and maintain eye contact.Try to ignore environmental distractions.
2. Show that we are listening by occasionally nodding, showing support through facial expressions and verbal comments such as, "Right" and "Yes".
3. Give feedback, even though we try to listen, personal assumptions can influence what we understand.Ask questions to match understanding.
4. Avoid judgmental, time-wasting interruptions. It is better for us to allow the person we are talking to to convey the message in its entirety and then ask questions.
5. Respond appropriately, active listening aims to encourage a sense of respect and understanding, not to attack the person you are talking to.
Active listening requires a lot of concentration and determination.Old habits are difficult to leave behind, but we have to start becoming better communicators.Start using active listening skills to increase productivity at work, and foster better relationships.
