Regularity, irregularity in Speaking

Oleh Erwin Parengkuan

The direction line can be straight, transverse, diagonal, exponential etc.If it is transferred in a tone of voice, the results are varied.A flat sound is of course monotonous, a diagonal sound I don't know the result of, an exponential sound will be like an atomic bomb about to explode.

In speaking skills, a person needs skills in controlling the tempo and pressure of the voice which can have an impact on the message to be conveyed. We also haven't talked about body language, appearance and even the choice of words which must be made with various variations and meanings.

When I speak, I always use various sounds.Sometimes it goes up, down, up again and still. Also the words I chose have a mixed variety.Standard language, slang, technical language etc. When we know the various styles and tempos of speaking, we can practice them in everyday communication. It will be fun and challenging!

In a book I read written by David A. Kolb, he said in the early 1970s, each of us must be skilled at self-exploration, the cool term is Experiential Learning.Like listening to music with different rhythms, watching a plot in a film or performing arts, we can take many opportunities to continue experimenting and practicing, to be able to find new ways/patterns/grooves in our ability to speak with impact.

In every class, as I often say, most participants do not use this Experiential Learning ability. They get a lot of best practices from us facilitators, but are reluctant to train them outside of class/session.

At that time I asked one of the participants, "What did you learn yesterday from the body language material?"Then I asked "has it been practiced?"He shook his head. This is always frequent, and we always get it when sharing in class. So what is the use of knowledge if it is not honed or applied in our daily lives?

In this article, I want to motivate you not to be like them, to be lazy and afraid to explore yourself by trying new ways.Just like the various shapes of the lines above, we also have to do it continuously to get various tactical moves in communicating so that it becomes interesting and continues to provide weight that will be used as a measurement by other people of our quality.Like a decoration on our office wall that I bought in Yogya that says "don't stop until you're proud!"
