Tujuan umum berbicara ada tiga, yaitu memberitahukan (to inform), menghibur (to entertain), dan mengajak atau meyakinkan atau (to persuade) (Tarigan, Berbicara: Sebagai Suatu Keterampilan Berbahasa, 2008).
